Filmed in the impoverished Spain of the early 1950s, Welcome Mr. Marshall is regarded one of the finest Spanish comedies. After hearing a group of American Embassy officials arriving in their country town, some notable villagers decide to turn their streets and plazas into a stereotypical Spanish setting, hoping to milk some of the Marshall Plan benefits. This clever argument became, under director Luis García Berlanga’s superb craftsmanship, an ironical scrutiny of a country confronting, not only scarcity and international humiliation, but also a rather chauvinistic and misplaced feeling of pride. When Berlanga passed away last November, cinema lost one of its true geniuses, and this film is one of his greatest works. Other films by Berlanga that have screened at La Mirada are The Executioner and Plàcido. Let this screening be our small homage to a giant of the cinematic art.
