ALEJANDRO AMENEBAR

Amenábar was born in Santiago Chile on the eve of Pinochet's 1973 coup-de-état. His mother, who had already gone through the Spanish Civil War, uprooted the whole family and fled back to Spain. He grew up in Madrid and entered the Sciences Information Faculty at Madrid's Complutense University. He struggled as a student and after numerous scholastic failures decided that instead of studying cinema - which was not what he wanted - he would make cinema - which definitely was. He acted, directed, produced and wrote the script and the music for his best known early short film Himenóptero (1992). Amenábar feature film debut Thesis (1996), written by him and Mateo Gil, won seven Goya Awards (and was nominated for an eighth), including the award for Best Film. It stars Ana Torrent, Fele Martínez and Eduardo Noriega. Later Abre Los Ojos and Los Otros (The Others) confirmed his status as a master filmmaker. He writes the script and music in all his films. He is also noted for his work in composing for other films as in La Lengua de las Maripos (1999).
