SALLY POTTER
Sally Potter born 19 September 1949, London, England, UK left school at sixteen to become a filmmaker. She joined the London Film-Makers' Co-op and started making experimental short films. Later, after training as a dancer and choreographer at the London School of Contemporary Dance, she founded her own company, The Limited Dance Company. She went on to become an award winning performer and theatre director. She also proved herself to be an extremely gifted musical artist. After working as a lyricist and song writer for several bands (including the Feminist Improvising Group and The Film Music Orchestra) she began to compose critically acclaimed scores to her own films. In 1979 she released a short film Thriller which triumphed on the international festival circuit. This was followed by London Story (1980), The Gold Diggers (1983), I Am an Ox, I Am a Horse, I Am a Man, I Am A Woman (1988). Orlando(1992), based on Virginia Woolf's classic novel was adapted for screen, co-composed and directed by Potter. It was an international sensation and brought her work to a wider audience. Nominated for two Academy Awards, it won more than 25 international awards, including the Felix awarded by the European Film Academy for the best Young European Film of 1993, and first prizes at St Petersburg, Thessaloniki, Venice, and other festivals. Her next film The Tango Lesson (1997) she again was the director, composer and writer, this time also staring in the movie with renowned tango dancer Pablo Veron. First presented at the Venice Film Festival, the film was awarded the "Ombú de Oro" for Best Film at the Mar del Plata Film Festival, Argentina, the SADAIC Great Award from the Sociedad Argentina de Autores y Compositores de Música, as well as receiving Best Film nominations from BAFTA and the US National Board of Review. This was followed by The Man who Cried (2000) staring Johnny Depp and Cate Blanchett, and Yes (2004) written entirely in Iambic Pentameter. Sally Potter premiered her new film Rage at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. Made on a small budget of £1 million, the film has created a new genre titled Naked Cinema.
