Argentinean filmmaker Gabriel Pomeraniec’s first documentary presents a rather unknown story in the history of an extremely popular music genre: the vital Jewish influence in the origins and development of tango. A melting pot of cultures and races, Eastern European Jews found in the late 19th century Buenos Aires a new safe haven. With them, they brought their popular, festive and deeply lyrical klezmer music that lies at the core of tango. Family memories, forgotten stories and anecdotes are skilfully connected to offer the viewer to a set of stories that had remained silent for the vast majority. Amongst these, the narration about the tango “Plegaria” giving solace to those shut away in concentration camps. This entertaining film constitutes a transparent reflection of cultural fusion at its best.
