Directed by the renowned Gonzalo Suárez, Rowing in the Wind stands out as a cult classic in Spanish cinema. Starring an international cast, including atypical performances by a young Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, the film constructs a quasi-horror and highly-stylized fiction around the true encounter of Romantic poet Lord Byron and the Shelleys in Europe in 1816, and the tragic events that befell afterwards. The bet that led Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein triggers a series of incidents that eventually leads to a tragic and historically true end for the writers and their families. Gonzalo Suárez matched a splendidly written script with luxuriant and decadent cinematography to re-create one of the most mythical moments in the history of literature.
