Directed by young filmmaker Nicolás Goldbart, and starring the irresistible Daniel Hendler, Phase 7 offers an exhilarating example of contemporary Argentinean cinema. A distinctive black comedy, the film tells the story of a young couple who discover that the apartment building they are living in is to be immediately quarantined due to the apparition of a deadly virus. Their ensuing forced seclusion brings about a series of outrageously hilarious events, alliances and conspiracies amongst the neighbours, leading to an unexpected denouement. Vaguely inspired by real-life events after the 2009 H1N1 outbreak, Goldbart has constructed a sparkling and delightful comedy that adds a fresh dimension and Hispanic accent to the “disaster film” sub-genre.
