Mother Dearly Beloved (Mater Amatísima)
An iconic oeuvre for Spanish film lovers, Mater Amatísima tells the story of Clara, an attractive, sophisticated and unmarried woman, and the autistic child who transforms and absorbs her life. Directed by José A. Salgot, and astonishingly interpreted by a very young Victoria Abril and autistic actor Julito de la Cruz, Mater Amatísima astonished audiences at Cannes Festival by providing an extreme dissection of the mother-child bond in an uneasily honest and rather confrontational way. This film is part of the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art alongside works by illustrious artists Buñuel, Dalí, Almodóvar and Portabella.
