Maverick auteur Bigas Luna crafted in Jamón Jamón one of his most singular and idiosyncratic portraits of Spain, starring a young Penélope Cruz in her first ever role and Javier Bardem. José Luis is an executive at his parents’ factory where his girlfriend Silvia works on the shop floor. When she falls pregnant, José Luis promises her marriage against his parents’ will. Raúl, a vulgar spunk and bullfighter wannabe is hired by José Luis’ mother to seduce Silvia. A bizarre love triangle is then created that will culminate in a most unpredictable way. Jamón Jamón provides Shakespearean undertones to a passionate love in the midst of a not-so-typical Spain made of machismo, bullfighting, fiery sexual passion and, of course, legs of ham.
