Based on a richly layered, airtight script by Paul Laverty (long time collaborator of Ken Loach), Even the Rain offers a superbly told indictment of the plight of Latin America's dispossessed. The film traces an artful analogy between the Spanish conquest of the Americas and the 20th century spread of capitalism. Gael García Bernal plays Sebastián, a director shooting a film in Bolivia about the Conquest. During the confronting filming process the crew are blindsided by the real world. Set in 2000, when protests against the privatisation of water ravaged the country, director Icíar Bollaín manages to blur the lines between fiction and reality, constructing a splendid and captivating film pregnant with crucial social reflections. Even the Rain is Spain's official entry for the 2011 Academy Awards.
