Young fiancée Mariana tries to enjoy the pleasures of bourgeois holidaying in a remote coastal location in Costa Rica when she finds Karina, a seven-year-old runaway who tells her a story of family abuse before disappearing. This anecdote offers director Paz Fabrega the minimal narrative spine that compels a most powerful drama. Agua Fría, indeed constitutes a rather extraordinary filmic experience. A sensitive slow paced narration, particularly convincing amateur actors and truly unique camera work result in a mesmerizing and poetic narration that infuses an atmosphere of mystery and meaningfulness to the most meaningless and mundane affairs.
