Cabeza de Vaca
About Film
Session Times
Saturday 23 April 2:00pm
Based on the true story of Alvar Cabeza de Vaca, this unorthodox epic film is an extraordinary tale of the Spanish conquistador who became shipwrecked in 1528 off the coast of Florida. One of only five survivors of a six hundred strong expedition, Cabeza de Vaca embarks on a journey of survival. Over eight years, he develops a relationship and appreciation for the natives defying the stereotypical notions of conquistador in the New World. Echevarría’s award-winning saga of old Mexico offers a nuanced insight in the delicate boundaries of power, race and culture, and the possibility of mutual understanding.
