Our official co-programmer, Pedro Almodóvar, picks a selection of his favourite Spanish films for every new edition of La Mirada. Since his youth as one of the conspicuous young turks of Madrid’s 1970s-1980s counterculture movement, Almodóvar has become one of Spain’s leading filmmakers. An internationally acclaimed auteur, he has constructed a personal and inimitable oeuvre that has helped to provide international status and recognition to our national cinema. He has received numerous international awards at the Cannes Film Festival, with career highlights including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for All About My Mother (Todo Sobre Mi Madre) and Best Original Screenplay for Talk to Her (Hable con Ella) and a nomination for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios). Almodóvar continues to impress international audiences with his enduring ability to create films that entertain, move, stir and inspire.
