ANG LEE

We are absolutely honoured to have Ang Lee as a guest curator. Considered one of today´s greatest filmmakers, the multi-awarded Ang Lee is one of our favourite directors. Winner of more than 67 awards, his wonderful films have garnered the most important recognition in the most prestigious festivals and award ceremonies around the world. From his second film, The Wedding Banquet,  which won the Golden Bear at the 1993 Berlin International Film Festival,  to Lust, Caution, winner of the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival in 2007, his movies have received numerous awards, amongst them several Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Lee’s first breakthrough international success came with the Academy Award winning Sense and Sensibility. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon swept the Oscar nominations, eventually winning Best Foreign Language Film, as well as Best Director at the Golden Globes and became the highest grossing foreign-language film ever released in America. Brokeback Mountain earned him an Oscar for Best Director in 2005. Ang Lee's directorial works are some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of the last decades.

Born in Taiwan in 1954, the son of a school principal, Lee was encouraged to develop a keen interest in Chinese culture and art. After attending college, Lee chose to override his father’s wish for him to become a professor in favour of pursuing a career in drama. In 1979 Lee enrolled in the University of Illinois where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in theatre. Moving to New York, Lee enrolled at the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University where he received his MFA and produced a 43 minute thesis film which attracted the attention of the William Morris Talent Agency. Lee’s success was slow to start, remaining unemployed for six years as a full-time house husband before exploding onto the scene with one of the most profitable films of the year, The Wedding Banquet (1993).

His choice, which will be revealed at the moment of the screening, is a masterpiece of Spanish cinema and will not disappoint his numerous fans.
