Pere Portabella, 67 min, Spain/USA, 1970. Documentary/Horror.

In the late 1970s, B-grade film director Jesús Franco was composing another insubstantial version of Dracula. While his camera filmed an aging Christopher Lee however, a most real and frightening vampire lurked behind the settings. Pere Portabella's Vampir Cuadecuc, an experimental precursor of the "making of" sub-genre, parasites Jesús Franco's picture to re-invent the vampiric myth. Portabella's film

generates a spectral and hallucinatory cinematographic experience by both revealing the entrails of the filmic process and re-arranging them in a radical form. Vampir Cuadecuc was shot in 16mm, daringly overexposed black and white, and accompanied by an eerily avant-garde soundtrack. This film shook the foundations of the Spanish filmic canon and still represents one of the most haunting accounts of vampirism. Brand new restored 35mm print.

"Vampir is, from all points of view, an unforgettable experience".

Cast: Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom, Soledad Miranda, Jack Taylor.
