Javier Fesser Shorts Reviews
His most comic vein. He attracted everybody’s attention when he started making shorts. His cinema is close to the cinema by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, Amelie) and the most exaggerated side of the Coen brothers (Arizona Baby and The Big Jump).
The Secdleto de la Tlompeta is a short with a diffused story, if we assume that what he told is considered a story. But in exchange we can enjoy the kindest priest in the world, the blindest forest ranger, and the most artistic Telecom workers in the world. And all that with Elvis Priestley rhythm. Very funny, indeed.
Binta and the Great Idea is another short that shows Javier Fesser’s interest on different social problems. Shot in Senegal with the help of UNICEF, the short tells two interrelated stories told by Binta, a young girl from Senegal. The short was nominated for an Academy Award in 2007.
It is a beautiful short to watch and to listen too. It is full of good intentions and no doubt it was nominated for an Academy Award. Nevertheless, it has to be said that this short does not play with subtleties but rather underlies its ideas.

Binta and the Great Idea breaks with all the previous films by the director from Madrid. His short is part of a Unicef project to bring out childhood problems. It a different short from what we are accustomed to, like for example the brilliant El Secdleto de la Tlompleta and the no least surrealist Pancho and Pincho.

The Pinkerton is an amusing short. A work presented at the 2007 Notodofilmfest by the well known Javier Fésser. I especially like it because of its surrealist and black humour and because a couple of linked gags, an exchange of phrases, an absence of plot and very few resources create a witty and delightful result. Emiliana Olmedo is priceless.
The Cabin also presented at the Notofilmfest is odd enough to attract attention. It is a simple but well developed idea through an intrigue and his traditional absurd and black humour.
Pancho and Pincho is a simple and funny gag that uses die laughing dialogue and eccentric characters to portray the very surrealism of The Miracle of P. Tinto and The Secdleto de la Tlompeta.

If you delve into his films you will find short jewels in the beast Javi and Lucy, the committed Binta and the Great Idea (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award) and my favorite, El Secdleto de la Tlompeta, for being so genuine and fully Fésser.
EXTRACINE
Javier Garrón
Javi and Lucy tells the unusual adventures of an apparently harmless child and his unpredictable nanny with Fesser’s surrealist humour. Apart from following the episode, the internet users have access to interactive possibilities (script suggestions, games, chats).

I laughed a lot with El Secdleto de la Tlompeta. I was also touched by the beautiful and witty Binta and the Great Idea which was nominated for an Academy Award.
LA BUTACA

Binta and the Great Idea is breezy and sincere, but so glossily directed that it feels like an ad for something.

(Binta and the Great Idea) Beautifully photographed short is an admirable but a tad too leisurely paced slice of life drama.

Binta and the Great Idea (Binta y La Gran Idea) is an old-school heart-warmer that dispenses bromides about how little ideas yield big results, no problem is insurmountable and children are smarter than we think. Lessons are learned.
