Los Tarantos
Francisco Rovira Beleta, 92min, Spain, 1963, Drama/Romance
Director Francisco Rovira Beleta achieved with Los Tarantos something that seemed impossible in Spain in the early 1960's: a poetic and honest depiction of gypsies and their millenary art. The film features Carmen Amaya, the legendary flamenco dancer who died shortly after filming. Challenging ridiculous stereotypes, Rovira Beleta created with technical virtuosity a gypsy musical drama that both portrayed a long tradition of social conflict and provided the audiences with some of the most frank and deeply moving flamenco performances ever.
Academy Award nomination, Best Foreign Film, 1964.
