The Executioner
(El Verdugo)
Luis Garcia Berlanga, 87 min, Spain 1963, Comedy.
Regarded by Spanish critics as their country’s greatest ever film, this brilliantly dark comedy has not lost its relevance. A tragicomic master-piece about an old, kind executioner and his daughter’s husband, who finds himself in the position of having to join the sordid guild of his father in law. Building to its horrifying conclusion, the appointed executioner is literally dragged to perform his duty. Berlanga’s film is filled with caustic and unsettling insights into the corrupt world generated by Francoist mentality. The Executioner is a timeless film, not to be missed.
